A Man for All Times

Dedicated to Trevor J. Morton

So raise up your glass to a man and his reasons
And drink it all down to a man and his rhymes
Whisky and brandy to a man for all seasons
And a pint of old ale to a man for all times

And let's drink to a man whose words became music
And let's drink to a man who wrote all those lines
And let's drink to a man whose words turned to magic
Just like the water was turned into wine

He threw his dart more deadly than Cupid
Into the heart of the woman, his pal
All through his life we shared in their gladness
As they sailed along the Grand Union Canal

All of his life he was a man of the people
Caring for others much more than himself
Oft times when he helped he came out the loser
But he couldn't change the way that he was

We needed him here this gentleman scholar
But it was his time to answer the call
We fought but we lost to the man with the power
His need for a poet was greatest of all

He'll always be missed by the people who loved him
He'll always be missed by his family and friends
He'll always be missed by his son and his daughters
And the people he'd spellbound right up to the end

So raise up your glass to a man and his reasons
And drink it all down to a man and his rhymes
Whisky and brandy to a man for all seasons
And a pint of old ale to a man for all times
